GVF-HANDS ON SKILLS TEST (HOST-B):

Objectives: Verification of student’s ability to use the core skills taught in online course GVF510 in a hands-on environment.

Skills overview: Assemble a typical VSAT; pre-set pol and elevation angles; find a designated satellite; accurately peak azimuth and elevation using the beam balance method; accurately set linear polarization; terminate a cable with a connector; weather seal the connector; general workmanship and neatness.

Delivery: The GVF Basic HOST* is administered by a Talia approved GVF Examiner at the Talia teleport. It may be given stand-alone or in combination with a supplementary training session, at the discretion of the instructor.

Prerequisites: The student should complete GVF510 (Core Skills for VSAT Installers) prior to attempting the HOST.

Examiner: The required skills must be demonstrated to an approved GVF Examiner.

The Global VSAT Forum offers three levels of Satellite Communications Professional certification for fixed VSAT professional installers, field technicians, and engineers.

GVF532 Core Up-linking Skills

When you have completed this course, you will understand fundamental theory of satellite communications important for operators of manually-controlled earth stations; how to calculate IF and RF frequencies and operate a spectrum analyser; how to use a spectrum analyser to identify the correct satellite; how to accurately point the antenna using the beam balance method; and how to work with a Satellite Access Centre to align cross-polarization.

This course is part of a training sequence tailored for broadcaster1 certification examinations, which are implemented and hosted by GVF. If you have already taken courses GVF530 and 531, you will be ready to attempt the knowledge tests and simulator skills tests in the Basic Technical Operator (BTO) exam. (Note that you must enrol in certification exams separately, or you may choose a training/exam combination from the GVF course catalogue.)

Preparation for BAPO Certification

When you have completed this course, you will know how to manually find a satellite using the antenna’s manual jog controls and the modem’s lock indicator; how to optimize azimuth and elevation pointing following the beam balance method, using the antenna’s jog controls and the modem’s received signal level indicator; and how to align cross-polarization by contacting the Satellite Access Centre and adjusting the antenna’s pol jog controls. This course is part of a training sequence tailored for broadcaster certification examinations. If you have already taken course GVF530 and complete the GVF531 course, you will be ready to attempt the knowledge tests and simulator skills tests in the General Auto-point Operator (GAPO) exam. Why should VSAT operators be trained? Marine VSAT terminals offer global broadband coverage to ships at sea. But for maximum uptime, crew members must be able to perform critical ongoing operational tasks after the installation technician has departed.
